Dell launches global charitable initiative

In addition, the computer maker plans to increase its overall charitable donations to 1 percent of its pre-tax profits by the beginning of February 2010. The contributions will come in the form of corporate cash, in-kind giving, and employee directed giving.

Starting on Monday, One Laptop Per Child’s XO laptop will be available through the Give One, Get One program again, this time facilitated by Amazon.com.

For $400, the nonprofit low-cost laptop program will send one XO to the purchaser and one to a school-age child in a developing country.

Borrego Solar scores $14 million in funding

Borrego Solar Systems, a manufacturer of a solar power systems that can connect to electrical grids, received $14 million in venture funding on Wednesday.

A 97.2 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system Borrego Solar installed for a mixed live/work property in Richmond, Calif.

Facebook members can now vote on the second round of finalists for its FBFund seed funding competition, which will give out a total of $225,000 to five grand prize winners. The 25 companies currently in the running have already pocketed $25,000 apiece for the applications they have proposed for Facebook’s third-party developer platform.
